How the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is Deeply Rooted in the History of Mercedes-Benz

Last updated 3 years ago

The E-Class is one of the most well-known models in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. Although the modern Mercedes-Benz E-Class has only been for a decade, its ancestry is deeply rooted in Mercedes-Benz history. Learn more about this world-famous vehicle below:

The Ponton (1953-1962)

The Ponton takes its namesake from its distinctive bulbous fenders and “envelope” styling. This icon of classic post-war styling incorporated several cutting-edge innovations from Mercedes-Benz, including a body that was directly attached to the car’s structure, a double-wishbone suspension up front, and a rear swing-arm suspension system. These spacious and outstandingly rugged vehicles are perhaps most recognizable as classic 1950s taxicabs.

The Fintail (1961-1968)

As the name suggests, the Mercedes-Benz Fintail received its name from the tail fins that flanked the taillights. Although the Fintail’s style is rooted in the ‘60s, its powertrain was well ahead of its time. Notable innovations included front disc brakes, an automatic transmission, and a six-cylinder engine.

The Stroke-80 (1968-1976)

The Stroke-80 is what comes to mind for many people in regards to classical luxury design. With an updated suspension, the addition of a catalytic converter, and a staggering level of versatility, the Stroke-8 was easily Mercedes-Benz’s biggest success to date.

The E-Class (1986-Present)

The “E-Class” first arrived in 1986, and its name originally derived from the German term for fuel-injection engine: Einspritzmotor. The modern E-class design began to take form by 1996 with a more aerodynamic exterior and quad headlamps. These collective refinements eventually culminated in the present E-Class in 2003, which continues to incorporate the latest innovations from Mercedes-Benz.
