Motor is a fundamental part of auto maintenance, but not all motor oil performs the same. This means that maintaining your pre-owned luxury car is more complicated than simply taking to any corner repair shop for an oil change:
Everyday Driving: Conventional Oil
In its most basic sense, conventional (i.e. mineral-based) oil is just crude oil that has been refined to remove impurities. Conventional oil generally won’t harm most vehicles under normal driving conditions. In fact, conventional oil is significantly cleaner than it used to be a few years ago, rendering the three-month/3,000-mile rule of thumb obsolete. Be sure to refer to your owner’s manual for specific service intervals.
Vintage Vehicles: Synthetic Blends/Special Purpose
Synthetic blends are a combination of conventional and full synthetic oil, which offers slightly better performance at a lesser cost than full synthetic oil. Some additives serve a special purpose. For example, “high mileage” blends contain conditioners to help rubber seals last longer and prevent fluid leaks.
Premium Performance: Synthetic Oil
Synthetic oils are specially formulated in a laboratory out of crude oil, where scientists are able to control the composition of the oil for greater stability, durability, and longevity. Full synthetic blends are, unsurprisingly, the most costly since they are designed to handle higher temperatures for longer periods of time without breaking down. Only a few high-end luxury makes such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Jaguar actually require full synthetic oils, so be sure to check out the owner’s manual specific to your car’s make, model, and year. Full synthetic oils are typically only used in high-performance vehicles which regularly endure intense driving conditions.
