How the Jaguar XJ Has Evolved Over the Years

    Last updated 1 year ago

Since 1968, the XJ has been one of the most notable models of the Jaguar brand. In its multiple iterations, it has continued to exemplify the carmaker’s seamless blend of design and performance. As you search for your next luxury used car, learn more about the Jaguar XJ models of the past with the following guide.

    1968—The Original

The first Jaguar XJ made quite an impression when it hit the streets back in 1968. “If you do not intend to buy an XJ6, don't try one, for ordinary cars will be spoilt for you thereafter,” wrote the Magazine Autosport, reflecting the views among car critics of the time. With its innovative design and plush interior, the model had a lasting impact on current Jaguar design director Ian Callum, who called it a “revelation.”

    1986—First Major Redesign

The first XJ went through three separate iterations before its first major redesign, introduced to high acclaim in 1986. The model was hailed for the modern innovations that made it one of the most comfortable cars on the road. A new, patented suspension gave the model a smooth ride, while plush interior features continued the XJ’s tradition of comfort.

    2002—A New Era

In 2002, Jaguar introduced the biggest alteration to the XJ in the model’s 35-year history: the new, aluminum XJ. The entire chassis and body structure were now built from aluminum, making the car 60 percent more rigid and lending it even more on-the-road comfort. While the model recalled the earlier days of grace and speed, it incorporated new technology and performance features that rivaled any new cars then on the road. Today, new Jaguar XJ’s continue in the same vein as this redesign, offering an elegant design, superior performance, and intuitive technology.
